Genocide or not?
There is a big dispute to settle, a long term query. If what happened in Darfur, Sudan was a Genocide or simply a mass murder or even a forced movement of people. Before we start to see, what happened in Darfur, we will need to understand some terminology. Genocide, the deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group; wich came from the latin “genos” race or tribe and “cide” killing. Mass murder, defined by the Thesaurus as the savage and excessive killing of many people. Finally forced movement of people, coerced movement of a person or persons away from their home or home region. It often connotes violent coercion.
In 2003, two non-Arabic rebel groups in Darfur raised against the government of Sudan, this groups where called, Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). Their reasons to rise up against the army, where that they felt marginalized by the government and felt that they did not protect them; they often suffered attacks of nomads. The Government did not have a better idea than to employ the Janjaweed’s, an Arabic militia that have being attributed to create over 1 million refugees. Arabs and Africans, who are difference by the tone of their skin, have being disputing the territory for many years, and the Government had no best idea than to employ the enemy of the rebels, to join forces with his militia. Never the less, Sudan Goverments denies any type of contact with this militia.
This event, is considered by many as a genocide. Due to a simple fact, there is an ethnic group trying to kill another ethnic or disappear another ethnic group. In this case the Arab’s killed the African’s rebels. Claiming over 400,000 lives and displaced over 2,500,000 people. However many do not consider it a genocide. People may consider it as the state trying to retain control, over a determine piece of land that is under their jurisdiction. In 2009, the president Omar al Bashir had a policy of mass killing, rape, and pillage, as if they where in war time against all of the civilians in Darfur.
Never the less, what happened and till this days occurs, covers what genocides are all about. So is up to you to decide if it was a genocide or not.
